Based on Mark 8:27-38
Holy God, as we begin a new year of education, of projects and events, of celebrations and disappointments, of transitions and new beginnings, we humbly ask that you would bless these objects we carry that have become integral to our daily living: bags, lunchboxes, car keys, purses, and backpacks—ordinary objects that somehow make our lives easier and more user-friendly. Bless them, that they might enable us to lead extra-ordinary lives, full of compassion, dedicated service, and gratitude.
O God, we pray to you:
Carry us, O Lord.
For the various objects inside these bags: homework, lunches, presentations, cell phones, projects that seem too big to tackle and To Do lists that only seem to get bigger as the days go on. Bless these assorted objects as well, that they might become more than simply things that cause us worry, stress, and anxiety, and instead become for us things that cause us to look to you for help.
O God, we pray to you:
Carry us, O Lord.
In scripture, you instruct us that in order to follow you, we must surrender our lives—the things that weigh us down; our fears and insecurities; our constant desire for approval and acceptance; and the nagging thought that ultimately we are alone to face life’s challenges. And so, may this tiny tag serve as a daily reminder that attempting to follow you faithfully is not something we are asked to do alone—but that no-matter-what you’ve always got our back!
O God, we pray to you:
Carry us, O Lord.
The world in which live is littered with crosses: the struggle for peace; the challenge of loving those who are different and difficult; the cause to work for change. Grant us the courage, the humility, and the guts to take up these crosses, trusting that ultimately it is you who will do the heavy lifting.
O God, we pray to you:
Carry us, O Lord.
We pray in the name of Jesus the Messiah.
AMEN.
